Fitting out attics or an attic room is a great way to easily expand your storage space. Optimising the attic gives you more living space, but also more storage, thanks to furniture that's perfectly suited to these small spaces. Cupboards or a bookcase if you have a little height,  or dressing room from 1m height, there are many solutions to use this too often neglected space! How do you fit out under-slope furniture properly? Our experts explain.

Define your desire

Do you want to improve the storage in your bedroom, brighten up a passageway room or an office. Depending on your needs and what you want to store in your under-slung furniture, the design of your furniture will be different. A perfectly made-to-measure piece of under-slung furniture can meet all your needs, so it's vital to define your requirements before you start configuring your furniture. There's a made-to-measure piece of furniture for every need!

How to design an enclosed sloping ceiling cupboard properly?

The classic layout for the sloping ceiling of an attic room is the installation of enclosed cupboards. With hinges on the left or right and a secretary opening, DessineTonMeuble explains how to choose and configure your doors.

Your room is finished, the paint is dry and now it's time to start building your made-to-measure furniture. Here's a very useful step-by-step :

You can furnish part or all of your under-slope. Measure the depth you want your cupboard to be. Your piece of furniture can occupy all or part of the depth of the slope. A drawer longer than 70cm won't offer a completely useful volume and will require a lot of space to open. Next, measure the desired height of your unit: the deeper your unit, the higher the front. Remember to make it easy to access the inside of your shelves all the way to the back... a maximum depth of 65cm is recommended to optimise the useful volume of a niche!

There are several ways to fit out your under-roof unit:

-        Use adjustable shelves : adjustable to the full height of the niche in which it is included or only to 3 positions, the adjustable shelf allows your cupboard to evolve according to your storage needs. A shelf that can be adjusted to the full height of the niche looks better behind a door. In fact, each side of the adjustable shelf will have holes spaced 32mm apart along the entire height of the niche. For a niche without a door, choose a shelf that can be adjusted to 3 positions only.

-      Use fixed shelves : we recommend using at least one fixed shelf per metre of furniture width to ensure the solidity of the unit. To optimise the layout of your made-to-measure under-shelf unit, opt for a clever mix of fixed and made-to-measure shelves.

.    Use drawers : all the drawers offered by DessineTonMeuble can be fully opened, optimising the accessibility of your drawer. A drawer less than 30cm deep is not recommended, nor is a drawer more than one and a half metres off the floor. Don't forget to add a fixed shelf above your drawer if it's the only one or the first of your drawers one above the other to make your piece of furniture more aesthetically pleasing.

How to choose the right type of doors ?

Depending on the position in your furniture of the niche you want to decorate with a door, the configuration of the door may vary.

Before setting up your door, you need to consider its surroundings. If it's against a staircase, for example, a secretary opening is the wisest choice. If, on the other hand, your closed niche is located at the very top of a tall piece of furniture, a top-opening door would seem to be the most suitable choice, provided of course there's nothing to stop it opening.

To choose the right or left-hand door opening direction, you need to study the slope of your walls. In fact, it will be easier to open a door in the opposite direction to the slope if the incline is steep.
