What are the dimensions for storing your clothes?

For an adult, you'll need a storage column about 60 centimetres wide and 60 centimetres deep. Shirts and jackets are about 1 metre high, trousers 1.20 metres and dresses and coats 1.60 metres. Naturally, the dimensions are smaller for children, but don't forget that they're going to grow up!"

Under the purlins or on the gable side?

The best way to save space is to install your dressing room under the intermediate purlins of the roof structure, where you can't stand up. If the room is too long, prefer the gable side. You can also combine the two.

Who is the dressing room for?

If it's for a couple, it's essential to provide two separate storage areas, as the needs are not the same for each: a high wardrobe for dresses, a lower one for jackets and shirts...

If it's for the children's bedroom, keep it simple and robust! And if there are several of them, each should have its own space.

How many drawers?

Make sure you do your sums: lingerie, jewellery, accessories, nightgowns... pants, socks, ties, watches and cufflinks...  Drawers help optimise the storage of small things. And if your dressing room has no doors or curtains, drawers immediately give it a tidier look.

Full or partial dressing room?

If you only have a small space under the slope, you could consider making a dressing room for shoes, jackets and suits, or sportswear, for example. Or the off-season dressing room, which frees up the whole family's cupboards.

Open or closed?

The vast majority of dressing rooms are closed, which means that the contents of the cupboards are hidden from view. This is essential when the room is also used for entertaining friends, such as in a studio flat, a child's bedroom, an office, a games room...

Also bear in mind that doors can become decorative elements, by choosing them in different colours or differentiating them by their handles (vintage, numbered, with an initial...)

However, you may not have the space for doors, which would impede circulation. In this case, you can choose the open option, especially if it's an adult bedroom, which is generally out of sight. But you can also install a simple curtain, which allows you to close without taking up space and makes an interesting decorative element.
