You're currently configuring your furniture on our configurator and you're hesitating between the different types of shelves we offer? Can't see the difference between a fixed shelf and anadjustable shelf? This article is for you.

The different types of shelving

Let's start with a summary of the different types of shelving we can offer you :

  • Fixed shelf
  • Adjustable shelf, on cleat 3 positions
  • Adjustable shelf, on cleat every 32 mm
  • Shelf on cleat 1 position

Let's take a closer look at the differences between each so that you can make the best choice for your needs.

Fixed shelf

The fixed shelf, as its name suggests, does not move. It will therefore not be possible to change its position over time.

It is fixed to the furniture uprights with a system of eccentrics, dowels and twists. It contributes, as a result, to the solidity of the furniture.

For large furniture, we recommend placing a fixed shelf every 1 metre. In addition, if your furniture is designed in several columns, we recommend you put fixed shelves in each of them.

Adjustable shelf

Adjustable shelves allow you to change the position of your shelves as you wish. They sit on cleats. This has the advantage of being able to adapt to your needs over time. A change of decoration, a need to increase the space between two shelves or on the contrary decrease it, adjustable shelves adapt to your needs.

At DessineTonMeuble, we have several types of adjustable shelves, let's take a closer look at their differences.

The 3-position cleat shelf:

This bespoke shelf has 3 holes, 40mm apart each, at the point where you position the shelf in the configurator.

The shelf on cleats every 32 mm :

This shelf has a multitude of holes, located every 32mm between two fixed elements.

The drillings are made in a standard way from the bottom of the case so that the case of a piece of furniture with several columns, they have the same drilling and you can align your shelves.

The drillings are interrupted if you place a fixed element (fixed shelf, drawer, sliding shelf), which keeps the aesthetic side for the visible parts and the practical side for the hidden parts behind a door for example.

The 1 position cleat shelf:

This type of shelf allows you to remove it from the structure of your furniture if necessary or if you no longer find it useful over time.

Whatever your choice of shelf, here are our recommendations:

The weight supported:

  • For shelves less than 40 cm wide: up to 30 kg
  • From 40 to 70 cm wide: 20 kg
  • More than 70 cm: the weight will need to be distributed along the shelf

The recommended length:

  • The maximum length we recommend is 75 cm, beyond this it is likely to warp over time under the weight of the load.

Shelf thickness:

  • You can also choose the thickness of your shelf either 18 mm, or 36 mm.

Configure your bespoke shelves

You have the option of adding cable trays to your shelves to meet all your needs by aesthetically camouflaging connections on your bespoke furniture .

The cable grommet is available on all shelves, whether fixed or adjustable and can be positioned in 6 different places, in a hole provided for this purpose.
